Melt value, buyer offer, purity and dwt — kept distinct
Melt value is the reference value of the gold content only — gross weight times purity fraction, times a Gold price. It is never a buyer offer (what a specific buyer proposes to pay, usually below melt value), a retail selling price (which adds making charge, markup and other costs), or an appraisal/collectible value (which can reflect brand, craftsmanship, age or rarity that has nothing to do with the gold itself). Purity (karat or fineness) states the fraction of pure gold in a piece — 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K and 24K are the common US standards, each an exact fraction of 24, never rounded. Pennyweight (dwt) is simply a weight unit — 1 dwt = 1.55517384 g exactly, 20 dwt = 1 troy ounce — with no bearing on purity or value on its own.
Every calculator states its own assumptions, its own reference-price source and timestamp when one is used, and never fabricates a price, a typical buyer deduction, or a tax rate. What a buyer actually pays depends on that buyer — these tools compute the arithmetic on the figures you enter, not a quote.
